Muslims killing Muslims

Share

When Islam was revealed, it enjoined a brotherhood upon the Muslim community, that Muslims should neither harm nor oppress one another. The Islamic texts on unity from both the Quran and the hadiths are many.

Yet if we turn our attention to the news and what’s happening, we will find that there are some Muslims who are fighting and killing other Muslims, and so many people often point to this as a means to dry and disprove Islam, and to supposedly show the backwardness of Islam.

Now while it is true that there are Muslims engaged in fighting-killing one another, can this really be blamed on Islam? If we read Islamic texts, we will find that the Islamic texts command Muslims to do the opposite, and warns of the severity of a Muslim killing another Muslims:

"And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell to abide therein; and the Wrath and the Curse of Allaah are upon him, and a great punishment is prepared for him" (4:93)

So according to the above verse, a Muslim who kills another Muslim intentionally, will be sent to hell, and he shall have both the wrath and curse of God upon him. This highlights the severity and how wrong it is for a Muslim to kill a fellow Muslim; therefore Islam is innocent from the wrongful actions of Muslims who engage in killing other innocent Muslims.

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in many narrations also spoke against Muslims fighting other Muslims:

Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 9:

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr:

The Prophet said, "A Muslim is the one who avoids harming Muslims with his tongue and hands. And a Muhajir (emigrant) is the one who gives up (abandons) all what Allah has forbidden."

Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 10:

Narrated Abu Musa:

Some people asked Allah's Apostle, "Whose Islam is the best? i.e. (Who is a very good Muslim)?" He replied, "One who avoids harming the Muslims with his tongue and hands."

Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 46:

Narrated 'Abdullah:

The Prophet said, "Abusing a Muslim is Fusuq (an evil doing) and killing him is Kufr (disbelief)."

So the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) expressly told the Muslims to not fight each other, and saying that if a Muslim kills another Muslim then it would amount to an act of kufr, meaning an act of disbelief.
