Islam VS Terrorism

Share

There are people who claim that Islam is a religion of terrorism, but how true are these major accusations? Is Islam really a religion of terrorism?

Well the way to really answer that question is by looking at the Islamic texts themselves and to see what they have to see, because that’s where we will find our answers.

Now when we do read Islamic texts, we find the following:

On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Then although there came to them Our messengers with clear signs, yet, even after that, many of them continued to commit excesses in the land. (5:32)

According to the Quran, if you were to kill one innocent person, it would be like you have killed all of humanity, and if you were to save one person, it would be like you have saved all of humanity.

This verse clearly refutes terrorism, it can’t get any clearer, this verse is a major contradiction to terrorism. The verse is clearly saying how wrong it is to take the life of an innocent person, therefore directly contradicting and going against acts of terrorism that leave several innocent people dead.

Let’s take a look at another Islamic text, this time a hadith, in which the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is reported to have said:

Bukhari Volume 004, Book 052, Hadith Number 257.

Narrated By 'Abdullah : During some of the Ghazawat of the Prophet a woman was found killed. Allah's Apostle disapproved the killing of women and children.

Once again we read another Islamic text that clearly refutes terrorism, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as the hadith shows, forbade the killing of women and children, not exactly the teachings you’d expect from a religion of terrorism.

If Islam was truly a religion of terrorism, then we wouldn’t expect to see the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) teaching his people to not kill women and children. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) telling the people to not kill women and children contradicts terrorism.

We have another hadith, this time reporting what Abu Bakr commanded when Muslims went to battle. Abu Bakr was one of the first persons to convert to Islam, he was a very close companion of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and became the first official leader of the Muslim community after the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). And according to Abu Bakr, he said the following:

Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said that Abu Bakr as-Siddiq was sending armies to ash-Sham. He went for a walk with Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan who was the commander of one of the battalions. It is claimed that Yazid said to Abu Bakr, "Will you ride or shall I get down?" Abu Bakr said, "I will not ride and you will not get down. I intend these steps of mine to be in the way of Allah."

Then Abu Bakr advised Yazid, "You will find a people who claim to have totally given themselves to Allah. Leave them to what they claim to have given themselves. You will find a people who have shaved the middle of their heads, strike what they have shaved with the sword.

"I advise you ten things| Do not kill women or children or an aged, infirm person. Do not cut down fruit-bearing trees. Do not destroy an inhabited place. Do not slaughter sheep or camels except for food. Do not burn bees and do not scatter them. Do not steal from the booty, and do not be cowardly." Maliks Muwatta Book 021, Hadith Number 010.

So according to Abu Bakr, the first caliph of Islam, he commanded the Mslims that when they go out to battle, that they should not kill women, children, and the elderly. Now again, if Islam were a religion of terrorism, we wouldn’t expect to see the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and the first caliph Abu Bakr, telling their followers to not kill women and children, and to not just go around indiscriminately killing everybody.

These teachings are a clear contradiction of terrorism, there’s no 2 ways about it, these teachings are the antithesis of terrorism.

Last but not least, we would not expect to find such a verse in the Quran that teaches Muslims the following:

“O you who believe! Stand out firmly for Allah as witnesses to fair dealings and let not the hatred of others to you make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice. Be just, that is next to piety. Fear Allah, indeed Allah is well-acquainted with all that you do.”(5:8)

According to the Quran, Muslims must stand out firmly for justice, even for people they hate, they must still stand firm in justice. Now why would the Quran tell Muslims to show justice for people they hate? If Islam were a religion of terrorism, then surely the Quran wouldn’t be telling Muslims to not let their hate overcome justice and fairness. Yet the Quran is telling Muslims to not let hatred of someone else swerve them away from justice.

So let’s summarize what we have so far:

-Islam says that killing one innocent person is like killing all of humanity

-The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) forbade the killing of women and children

-Abu Bakr the first caliph of Islam also forbade the killing of women and children

-The Quran tells the Muslims to stand firm on justice even with people whom they hate, and to not let hate overcome fairness and justice in dealings.

And this is a supposed religion of terrorism?
