Is the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) a true prophet? Part 4

Share

We resume our refutation to Sam Shamoun's 6 propositions (arguments) that he has raised against the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

All readers are advised to read the previous three rebuttals which respond to Shamoun's first three propositions, the rebuttals can be found here: 1, 2, 3.

In this rebuttal there will be no need to get into a deep analysis of Shamoun's fourth proposition, which is that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) allegedly made false prophecies. The issue has already been addressed here:

http://muslim-responses.com/Prophecies_of_Muhammad/Prophecies_of_Muhammad_

http://muslim-responses.com/Prophecies_2/Prophecies_2_

http://answering-christianity.com/sami_zaatri/rebuttal_to_sam_shamoun_55.htm

So the above deals with Shamoun's fourth proposition. So let us now move to his 5th proposition. He writes:

Muhammad condoned and or committed atrocious sins

RESPONSE

An important point must be made, by which standard is Shamoun going by? He claims the prophet committed atrocious acts and sins, yet according to whom? To Sam Shamoun or the Bible? As we shall shortly see Shamoun is now arguing from his personal stand point, not from his own book.

He writes:

According to Muhammad, Allah is the best conniver and is also a deceiver:

The Hypocrites - they seek to deceive Allah but it is Allah Who DECEIVES them. When they stand up to prayer, they stand without earnestness, to be seen of men, but little do they hold Allah in remembrance; S. 4:142

And (the unbelievers) schemed and planned, and Allah schemed also, and the best of schemers is Allah. S. 3:54

Remember how the unbelievers schemed against thee, to keep thee in bonds, or to slay thee, or get thee out (of thy home). They scheme and plot, but the best of schemers is Allah. S. 8:30

The term for scheme in Arabic is makara and denotes one who is a deceiver, a conniver, a schemer. It is always used in a negative sense. Allah is thus seen as the best of deceivers, the premiere schemer and conniving one.

RESPONSE

It is always good to use something called context, let us see the context of both Surah's something Shamoun failed to highlight, starting with Surah 4:142:

004.142 The Hypocrites - they think they are over-reaching Allah, but He will over-reach them: When they stand up to prayer, they stand without earnestness, to be seen of men, but little do they hold Allah in remembrance;

Notice the context and the main part? It is the hypocrites who try to play games with God, they try to deceive God, yet in the end it is God who deceives them. God is only deceiving the evil doers, because they are trying to cause evil against him, but it will not work. As Ibn Kathir writes:

(They (think to) deceive Allah and those who believe). Here, Allah states,

(Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is He Who deceives them.) There is no doubt that Allah can never be deceived, for He has perfect knowledge of the secrets and what the hearts conceal. However, the hypocrites, due to their ignorance, scarce knowledge and weak minds, think that since they were successful in deceiving people, using Islamic Law as a cover of safety for themselves, they will acquire the same status with Allah on the Day of Resurrection and deceive Him too. Allah states that on that Day, the hypocrites will swear to Him that they were on the path of righteousness and correctness thinking that such statement will benefit them with Allah. For instance, Allah said,

(On the Day when Allah will resurrect them all together; then they will swear to Him as they swear to you) Allah's statement,

(but it is He Who deceives them) means, He lures them further into injustice and misguidance. He also prevents them from reaching the truth in this life and on the Day of Resurrection.

The same applies to the second verse Shamoun cites, which reads:

008.030  Remember how the Unbelievers plotted against thee, to keep thee in bonds, or slay thee, or get thee out (of thy home). They plot and plan, and Allah too plans; but the best of planners is Allah.

So again the verse is aimed against those who plot and plan against the Muslims, against God's people, and against God's rules. As they plan against the truth, God also plans against them, that is the context, as Ibn Kathir writes:

Imam Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar, the author of Al-Maghazi, reported from `Abdullah bin Abi Najih, from Mujahid, from Ibn `Abbas, "Some of the chiefs of the various tribes of Quraysh gathered in Dar An-Nadwah (their conference area) and Iblis (Shaytan) met them in the shape of an eminent old man. When they saw him, they asked, `Who are you' He said, `An old man from Najd. I heard that you are having a meeting, and I wished to attend your meeting. You will benefit from my opinion and advice.' They said, `Agreed, come in.' He entered with them. Iblis said, `You have to think about this man (Muhammad)! By Allah, he will soon overwhelm you with his matter (religion).' One of them said, `Imprison him, restrained in chains, until he dies just like the poets before him all died, such as Zuhayr and An-Nabighah! Verily, he is a poet like they were.' The old man from Najd, the enemy of Allah, commented, `By Allah! This is not a good idea. His Lord will release him from his prison to his companions, who will liberate him from your hands. They will protect him from you and they might expel you from your land.' They said, `This old man said the truth. Therefore, seek an opinion other than this one.'

Another one of them said, `Expel him from your land, so that you are free from his trouble! If he leaves your land, you will not be bothered by what he does or where he goes, as long as he is not among you to bring you troubles, he will be with someone else.' The old man from Najd replied, `By Allah! This is not a good opinion. Have you forgotten his sweet talk and eloquency, as well as, how his speech captures the hearts By Allah! This way, he will collect even more followers among Arabs, who will gather against you and attack you in your own land, expel you and kill your chiefs.' They said, `He has said the truth, by Allah! Therefore, seek an opinion other than this one.' hAbu Jahl, may Allah curse him, spoke next, `By Allah! I have an idea that no one else has suggested yet, and I see no better opinion for you. Choose a strong, socially elevated young man from each tribe, and give each one of them a sharp sword. Then they would all strike Muhammad at the same time with their swords and kill him. Hence, his blood would be shed by all tribes. This way, his tribe, Banu Hashim, would realize that they cannot wage war against all of the Quraysh tribes and would be forced to agree to accept the blood money; we would have brought comfort to ourselves and stopped him from bothering us.'

The old man from Najd commented, `By Allah! This man has expressed the best opinion, and I do not support any other opinion.' They quickly ended their meeting and started preparing for the implementation of this plan.

Jibril came to the Prophet and commanded him not to sleep in his bed that night and conveyed to him the news of their plot. The Messenger of Allah did not sleep in his house that night, and Allah gave him permission to migrate. After the Messenger migrated to Al-Madinah, Allah revealed to him Suat Al-Anfal reminding him of His favors and the bounties He gave him,

(And (remember) when the disbelievers plotted against you to imprison you, or to kill you, or to expel you (from Makkah); they were plotting and Allah too was plotting; and Allah is the best of plotters.)

Allah replied to the pagans' statement that they should await the death of the Prophet , just as the poets before him perished, as they claimed,

(Or do they say: "He is a poet! We await for him some calamity by time!'') [52:30]

As-Suddi narrated a similar story.

Muhammad bin Ishaq reported from Muhammad bin Ja`far bin Az-Zubayr, from `Urwah bin Az-Zubayr who commented on Allah's statement,

(...they were plotting and Allah too was plotting, and Allah is the best of plotters.) "I (Allah) plotted against them with My sure planning, and I saved you (O Muhammad) from them.''

So notice the context of the verse, it is aimed against the enemies of God, the pagan Quraysh who tried to kill the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Also note that Satan joined these enemies of God and supported the last option, that all men of each family should stab the prophet, it was Satan’s agreement of this last option that led the pagans to carry it out. Yet God is all-wise, and he plots and plans against these evil wicked people.

Now what about Shamoun's own God? We read from Isaiah 19:14:

The LORD hath mingled a perverse spirit in the midst thereof: and they have caused Egypt to err in every work thereof, as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit.

The word for perverse is translated as `av`ehIn Hebrew which means distorting, perverting, and warping. So basically according to Isaiah 19:14 God sends a lying deceiving spirit amongst the Egyptians and that this lying spirit has caused the Egyptians to become like a drunk man who falls into his own vomit.

Also what about Jesus? We read in Mark 4:10-12:

And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable.   And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:  That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.

Notice what Jesus says here, he clearly states that the main reason as to why he speaks in parables is so that the unbelievers are not able to understand him, and thereby they will not be saved.

What about apostle Paul? Well let us see what he himself said in 1 Corinthians 9:19-22:

For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more. And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.  To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

So notice Paul changes his ways and religion in front of others as a way to convert them. So to a Jew he pretends that he is a Jew, and to an Atheist he acts like an atheist.

Paul continues to admit that he is a deceiver when he says in 2 Corinthians 12:16:

Be that as it may, I have not been a burden to you. Yet, crafty (panourgos) fellow that I am, I caught you by trickery (dolos)!

Shamoun continues:

Allah even deceived Muslims:

"When Allah showed them unto thee (O Muhammad) in thy dream as few in number, and if He had shown them to thee as many, ye (Muslims) would have faltered and would have quarrelled over the affair. But Allah saved (you). Lo! He knoweth what is in the breasts (of men). And when He made you (Muslims), when ye met (them), see them with your eyes as few, and lessened you in their eyes, (it was) that Allah might conclude a thing that must be done. Unto Allah all things are brought back." S. 8:43-44

Allah had to show the opposing fighting forces as few to Muhammad and his companions since if they saw them as they actually were, the Muslims would have been afraid to fight. Allah had to use deception in order to encourage the Muslims to fight in his cause.

RESPONSE

Is this supposed to make us leave Islam? In reality this incident shows how good God is, the Muslims were in fear and afraid prior to the battle of Badr, so God strengthened their resolve by easing their fear and making the enemy troops look less in number. This made the Muslims confident, and took away their fear, and led them to fight with no fear and achieve a divine and blessed victory.

Shamoun continues:

KAB B. AL-ASHRAF

Narrated Jabir Abdullah:

Allah's messenger said "Who is willing to kill Ka'b bin Al-Ashraf who has hurt Allah and His apostle?" Thereupon Maslama got up saying, "O Allah's messenger! Would you like that I kill him?" The prophet said, "Yes". Maslama said, "Then allow me to say a (false) thing (i.e. to deceive Ka'b). The prophet said, "You may say it."

Maslama went to Ka'b and said, "That man (i.e. Muhammad) demands Sadaqa (i.e. Zakat) [taxes] from us, and he has troubled us, and I have come to borrow something from you." On that, Ka'b said, "By Allah, you will get tired of him!" Maslama said, "Now as we have followed him, we do not want to leave him unless and until we see how his end is going to be. Now we want you to lend us a camel load or two of food." Ka'b said, "Yes, but you should mortgage something to me." Maslama and his companion said, "What do you want?" Ka'b replied, "Mortgage your women to me." They said, "How can we mortgage our women to you and you are the most handsome of the Arabs?" Ka'b said, "Then mortgage your sons to me." They said, "How can we mortgage our sons to you? Later they would be abused by the people's saying that so and so has been mortgaged for a camel load of food. That would cause us great disgrace, but we will mortgage our arms to you."

Maslama and his companion promised Ka'b that Maslama would return to him. He came to Ka'b at night along with Ka'b's foster brother, Abu Naila. Ka'b invited them to come into his fort and then he went down to them. His wife asked him, "Where are you going at this time?" Ka'b replied, None but Maslama and my (foster) brother Abu Naila have come." His wife said, "I hear a voice as if blood is dropping from him." Ka'b said, "They are none by my brother Maslama and my foster brother Abu Naila. A generous man should respond to a call at night even if invited to be killed.

Maslama went with two men. So Maslama went in together with two men, and said to them, "When Ka'b comes, I will touch his hair and smell it, and when you see that I have got hold of his head, strike him. I will let you smell his head."

Ka'b bin Al-Ashraf came down to them wrapped in his clothes, and diffusing perfume. Maslama said, "I have never smelt a better scent than this." Ka'b replied, "I have got the best Arab women who know how to use the high class of perfume." Maslama requested Ka'b, "Will you allow me to smell your head?" Ka'b said "yes." Maslama smelt it and made his companions smell it as well. Then he requested Ka'b again, "Will you let me (smell your head)?" Ka'b said "Yes". When Maslama got a strong hold of him, he said (to his companions) "Get at him!" So they killed him and went to the prophet and informed him." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 5, Number 369: http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/fundamentals/hadithsunnah/bukhari/059.sbt.html#005.059.369)

ABU AFAK

Then occurred the "sariyyah" [raid] of Salim Ibn Umayr al-Amri against Abu Afak, the Jew, in [the month of] Shawwal in the beginning of the twentieth month from the hijrah [immigration from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD], of the Apostle of Allah. Abu Afak, was from Banu Amr Ibn Awf, and was an old man who had attained the age of one hundred and twenty years. He was a Jew, and used to instigate the people against the Apostle of Allah, and composed (satirical) verses [about Muhammad].

Salim Ibn Umayr who was one of the great weepers and who had participated in Badr, said, "I take a vow that I shall either kill Abu Afak or die before him." He waited for an opportunity until a hot night came, and Abu Afak slept in an open place. Salim Ibn Umayr knew it, so he placed the sword on his liver and pressed it till it reached his bed. The enemy of Allah screamed and the people who were his followers, rushed to him, took him to his house and interred him. (Ibn S'ad, Kitab Al Tabaqat Al Kabir [Book Of The Major Classes], English translation by S. Moinul Haq, M.A., PH.D assisted by H.K. Ghazanfar M.A. [Kitab Bhavan Exporters & Importers, 1784 Kalan Mahal, Daryaganj, New Delhi- 110 002 India], Volume 2, p. 32; bold emphasis ours)

ASMA B. MARWAN

SARIYYAH OF UMAYR IBN ADI'

Then (occurred) the sariyyah of Umayr ibn adi Ibn Kharashah al-Khatmi against Asma Bint Marwan, of Banu Umayyah Ibn Zayd, when five nights had remained from the month of Ramadan, in the beginning of the nineteenth month from the hijrah of the apostle of Allah. Asma was the wife of Yazid Ibn Zayd Ibn Hisn al-Khatmi. She used to revile Islam, offend the prophet and instigate the (people) against him. She composed verses. Umayr Ibn Adi came to her in the night and entered her house. Her children were sleeping around her. There was one whom she was suckling. He searched her with his hand because he was blind, and separated the child from her. He thrust his sword in her chest till it pierced up to her back. Then he offered the morning prayers with the prophet at al-Medina. The apostle of Allah said to him: "Have you slain the daughter of Marwan?" He said: "Yes. Is there something more for me to do?" He [Muhammad] said: "No. Two goats will butt together about her." This was the word that was first heard from the apostle of Allah. The apostle of Allah called him Umayr, "basir" (the seeing). (Ibn Sa'd's Kitab Al-Tabaqat Al-Kabir, Volume 2, p. 31; bold emphasis ours)

Muhammad was only emulating his own god.

The Lord Jesus warns against such people:

"You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies." John 8:44

RESPONSE

We shall shortly see the lovely double standards and deception by Sam Shamoun. For starters Shamoun is claiming the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was a vicious murderer for having those three people killed, namely Kab Bin Ashraf, Abu Afak, and Asma bint Marwan.

For starters when it comes to Abu Afak and Asma these two stories have been proven to be weak and not authentic hence Shamoun has no case, it does not matter if Shamoun doesn't like this response as we Muslims reject the two stories hence he cannot use it against us.

What about Kab? Well yet again Shamoun has failed to look at the context of the incident, since Shamoun couldn't provide the context for us, we shall do it instead, and we read:

Ibn Ishaq stated, " Ka'b b. al-Ashraf was of the Ta'I tribe, of the sub-tribe of Banu Nabhan, though his mother was of Banu al-Nadir. He received news of the deaths of those at Badr after the arrival of Zayd b. Al- Haritha and Abd Allah b. Rawaha. He commented, ‘By God, if Muhammad has really struck down those people, then better be inside the earth than upon it!" When this enemy of God was sure of this news, he left for Mecca, where he visited al-Muttalib b. Abu Wada'a b.Dubayrat al- Samhi, whose wife was Atika, daughter of Abu al- Is b. Ummayya b. Abd Shams b. ‘bd Manaf. She accommodated him graciously AND HE BEGAN INSTIGATING AN ATTACK UPON THE MESSENGER OF GOD (SAAS) speaking verses and mourning the deaths of those polytheists killed at Badr."Here Ibn Ishaq gave his poem which begins with the verse,"The Badr millstone ground to death those killed there, and for the like of Badr one speaks and weeps." He also gave the response to this poem by Hassan b. Thabit, may God be pleased with him, as well as verse by others. He went on, " Ka'b then returned to Medina where he composed verses suggestive about the Muslim women and critical of the prophet (SAAS) and his followers. Musa b. Uqba stated, "Ka'b b. al- Ashraf was of Banu al-Nadir, or associated with them, he harmed the messenger of God (SAAS) by ridiculing him in verse AND HE RODE TO QURAYSH TO INCITE THEM FURTHER. Abu Sufyan, in Mecca, asked him, ‘In your view, I pray you tell me, which religion is more favored by God, that of Muhammad and his friends, or our own? Which of us do you think, is more correct and appropriate? We slaughter our meat generously, give milk-topped water to drink, providing food for all sundry who come.' "Ka'b b al-Ashraf replied,  You are better-guided in your path than they are.' Abu Sufyan, in Mecca, asked him,  In your view, I pray you tell me, which religion is more favored by God, that of Muhammad and his friends, or our own? Which of us do you think, is more correct and appropriate? We slaughter our meat generously, give milk-topped water to drink, providing food for all sundry who come.' "Ka'b b al-Ashraf replied, You are better-guided in your path than they are.' Musa went on, " And so God revealed to his Messenger the verses: "Have you not considered those given a part of the Book who believe in enchantment and devils, and who say to those who disbelieve, " These are better guided on the path than those who believe (in God). " They are indeed cursed by God; those whom God curses you shall find to be without succour' " ( surat al-Nisa; IV, v.51,2).Both Musa and Ibn Ishaq stated further, " He went to Medina where he proclaimed his enmity and INCITED PEOPLE TO GO TO WAR. He had not left Mecca BEFORE HE HAD UNITED THEM TO FIGHT THE MESSENGER OF GOD (SAAS); he then began composing amatory verses about Umm al-Fadl b. al-Harith and other Muslim women. Pg. 7

This is from Ibn Kathir's biography of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and Ibn Kathir is simply quoting the same story from Ibn Ishaq.

So as you can all see, Ka'b was the one who started the trouble, he not only insulted the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), but he also went to the prophet's enemies, and incited them to fight against Muhammad (pbuh) and the Muslim community. So therefore as we see, Ka'b was not innocent, Ka'b incited people to war, and he managed to unite the enemies of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) with the intention of fighting and killing the Muslims and the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Perhaps Shamoun is angry because this is exactly what he wanted, for the Muslims and the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to be killed, what a lovely missionary right?

Now since we are on the topic of killing and murdering then what about Shamoun's Bible? Well for starters let us see what Shamoun's Bible has to say about blasphemers:

And he that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of the Lord, shall be put to death. (Leviticus 24:16)

Off course Shamoun will have no problem with this verse, talk about inconsistency.

Sam Shamoun has no problem with murder or killing, he is just using deception against his ignorant readers, Shamoun justifies the murder and killing of innocent women and children when it is done in his own Bible, this is what he himself wrote:

From a biblical perspective God is even just in commanding the death of infants and children(http://www.answeringislam.net/Shamoun/q_amalekites.htm)

This is from the missionary himself, The missionary was referring to such passages:

Deuteronomy
Chapter 3

1-7

1 Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei. 2 And the LORD said unto me, Fear him not: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon. 3 So the LORD our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining. 4 And we took all his cities at that time, there was not a city which we took not from them, threescore cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 5 All these cities were fenced with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great many. 6 And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city. 7 But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey to ourselves

Joshua
Chapter 8

1-29

1 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land: 2 And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.

3 So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valor, and sent them away by night. 4 And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready: 5 And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them, 6 (For they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will flee before them. 7 Then ye shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand. 8 And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the LORD shall ye do. See, I have commanded you. 9 Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people. 10 And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai. 11 And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai. 12 And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city. 13 And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley. 14 And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city. 15 And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness. 16 And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city. 17 And there was not a man left in Ai or Bethel, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel. 18 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city. 19 And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire. 20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers. 21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai. 22 And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.

23And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua. 24 And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword. 25 And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai. 26 For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai. 27Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he commanded Joshua. 28 And Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever, even a desolation unto this day. 29 And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcass down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.

And Shamoun's response to this is as follows:

Shamoun continues:

God told Israel that if they found an attractive girl amongst the captives they could marry her, but they could not sell or abuse her:

"When you go to war against your enemies and the LORD your God delivers them into your hands and you take captives, if you notice among the captives a beautiful woman and are attracted to her, you may take her AS YOUR WIFE. Bring her into your home and have her shave her head, trim her nails and put aside the clothes she was wearing when captured. After she has lived in your house and mourned her father and mother for a full month, then you may go to her and be her husband and she shall be your wife. If you are not pleased with her, let her go wherever she wishes. You must not sell her or treat her as a slave, since you have dishonored her." Deuteronomy 21:10-14

An Israelite could not touch a captive he found attractive for 30 days, which allowed for the captive to mourn the loss of her family and country. The intention of this law was to protect her against any rude passion on the part of the man (i.e., rape). It also gave her time to blend in with the Israelites and to develop affection for the man. Hence, the law served as a mercy from God to protect her against rape.

It clearly highlights God's great compassionate for non-Israelite women taken in war. Gentile women were not necessarily given covenant protection as Israelite women were given. And yet God gives these captive Gentile women protection and insures that they were not regarded as mere slaves, or as contraband from the battle. God in his love gave them the full status of wives, just like Israelite women!

RESPONSE

Shamoun thinks that if he quotes one passage where it seems to show kindness to female slaves then this means the Bible is generally good on female captives, Think again.

The Bible allows you to torture and beat your slave:

Exodus 21:20-21

When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hardthat the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property

So the Bible allows you to beat your female slave as hard as you like, you just have to make sure she does not die. The irony is amazing, Shamoun above wrote:

The intention of this law was to protect her against any rude passion on the part of the man (i.e., rape). It also gave her time to blend in with the Israelites and to develop affection for the man. Hence, the law served as a mercy from God to protect her

Yes and this same God also has a ruling that allows the Israelite man to beat this female slave as much he likes.

Number two again notice the irony, Shamoun is claiming his God wants to show mercy and protection to the women, is Shamoun talking about the same God that kills thousands of women according to his Bible? This same God that does:

Ezekiel 9:5-7

"Then I heard the LORD say to the other men, "Follow him through the city and kill everyone whose forehead is not marked. Show no mercy; have no pity! Kill them all - old and young, girls and women and little children. But do not touch anyone with the mark. Begin your task right here at the Temple." So they began by killing the seventy leaders. "Defile the Temple!" the LORD commanded. "Fill its courtyards with the bodies of those you kill! Go!" So they went throughout the city and did as they were told."

Is this the same God Shamoun is talking about when he claims his God is looking out for the women? Shamoun also claimed his God wanted to protect the women from rape, that is quite funny though, is Shamoun talking about the same God who allows women to be raped as well:

Isaiah 13:15-18

Anyone who is captured will be run through with a sword. Their little children will be dashed to death right before their eyes. Their homes will be sacked and their wives raped by the attacking hordes. For I will stir up the Medes against Babylon, and no amount of silver or gold will buy them off. The attacking armies will shoot down the young people with arrows. They will have no mercy on helpless babies and will show no compassion for the children.

Is Shamoun sure he has the right God when he writes:

The intention of this law was to protect her against any rude passion on the part of the man (i.e., rape). It also gave her time to blend in with the Israelites and to develop affection for the man. Hence, the law served as a mercy from God to protect her

Obviously Shamoun must be confused.

Secondly, Shamoun seems to want to give the impression that according to his Bible men are not allowed to have sex with female captives outside marriage. Well if he is trying to give that view then let us refute it from now:

Numbers 31:17-18

Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

This verse allowed the Israelites to take all the virgin girls for themselves. Notice the verse does not say save the girls for marriage, or take the girls and marry them. It simply says save the virgin girls for yourselves. So basically this verse allowed the Israelite men to have sex with the virgin girls outside marriage.

Also moving onto the subject of rape, Shamoun claimed that his God wants to protect women from rape, is this the same God that says that raped victims must marry their rapist? We read:

"If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives." Deuteronomy 22:28-29 NIV

Shamoun continues:

Muhammad, on the other hand, permitted Muslims to sleep with slave girls without having to marry them first

RESPONSE

And how does that make Muhammad (pbuh) a false prophet? Answer: It doesn't. For more on this subject visit the following links:

http://answering-christianity.com/umar/slave_girls.htm

http://answering-christianity.com/karim/no_rape_of_female_slaves.htm

Shamoun continues:

God's true Word says:

"If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, and if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of another man, and her second husband dislikes her and writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, or if he dies, then her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to marry her again after she has been defiled. That would be detestable in the eyes of the LORD. Do not bring sin upon the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance." Deuteronomy 24:1-4

Muhammad, on the other hand, commands:

"A divorce is only permissible twice: after that, the parties should either hold together on equitable terms, or separate with kindness. It is not lawful for you, (men), to take back any of your gifts (from your wives), except when both parties fear that they would be unable to keep the limits ordained by Allah. If ye (judges) do indeed fear that they would be unable to keep the limits ordained by Allah, there is no blame on either of them if she give something for her freedom. These are the limits ordained by Allah. So do not transgress them if any do transgress the limits ordained by Allah, such persons wrong (themselves as well as others). So if a husband divorces his wife (irrevocably), he cannot, after that, remarry her until after she has married another husband and he has divorced her. In that case there is no blame on either of them if they re-unite, provided they feel that they can keep the limits ordained by Allah. Such are the limits ordained by Allah, which He makes plain to those who understand." S. 2:229-230

What Yahweh calls an abomination, Muhammad calls permissible!

RESPONSE

Circular reasoning again, Bible says A, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) says B, therefore B is wrong. This is not a real argument, and arguments like this will not make us Muslims doubt Muhammad's (pbuh) prophethood.

Number two there is a way to reconcile both the Bible and the Quran on this issue. It could be said that in the time of Moses (pbuh) God forbade such an act, but God in the time of Muhammad (pbuh) abrogated the act in Deuteronomy and now allowed for divorced couples to remarry.

The God of the Bible is known to allow some things for one time period, and then not for a later time period, such as Abraham (pbuh) marrying his half sister:

Genesis 20:11-12: 11 And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake. 12 And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.

However we also see the Bible later on forbids such an action:

Deuteronomy 27:22: 22 Cursed be he that lieth with his sister, the daughter of his father, or the daughter of his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen

So as you can see God allows for something but then later abrogates it, the same can be said for the above concerning the remarriage of divorced couples.

Number the two the reason why God would later allow divorced couples to remarry is because they may have fallen in love again, and want to reconcile, hence God is merciful and allows them to get remarried as a mercy to their feelings.

Shamoun then raises the issue of the prophet's  supposed divorce to Sauda Bint Zamah:

Muhammad wanted to divorce one of his wives because she had gotten too old. The Quran alludes to this incident:

And if a woman fears ill usage or desertion on the part of her husband, there is no blame on them, if they effect a reconciliation between them, and reconciliation is better, and avarice has been made to be present in the (people's) minds; and if you do good (to others) and guard (against evil), then surely Allah is aware of what you do. S. 4:128

Ibn Kathir states:

Making peace is better than separation. An example of such peace can be felt in the story of Sawdah bint Zam'ah who WHEN SHE BECAME AGED, THE PROPHET WANTED TO DIVORCE HER, but she made peace with him by offering the night he used to spend with her to A'isha so that he would keep her. The Prophet accepted such terms and kept her.

Abu Dawud At-Tayalisi recorded that Ibn ‘Abbas said, "Sawdah feared that the Messenger of Allah might divorce her and she said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! Do not divorce me; give my day to 'A'ishah.' And he did.

In the Two Sahihs, it is recorded that 'A'ishah said that when Sawdah bint Zam'ah BECAME OLD, she forfeited her day to 'A'ishah and the Prophet used to spend Sawdah's night with 'A'ishah ...

.IT REFERS TO THE WIFE RELINQUISHING SOME OF HER MARITAL RIGHTS and his acceptance of the offer. Such compromise is better than total divorce, as the Prophet did when retained Sawdah bint Zam'ah. By doing so, the Prophet set an example for his Ummah to follow as it is a lawful act ... RESPONSE

There is a slight problem for Shamoun, that problem is that the Sahih hadiths which discuss this incident say nothing about the prophet wanting to divorce Sauda. The hadiths state:

Narrated Aisha:
Whenever Allah's Apostle wanted to go on a journey, he would draw lots as to which of his wives would accompany him. He would take her whose name came out. He used to fix for each of them a day and a night. But Sauda bint Zam'a gave up her (turn) day and night to ‘Aisha, the wife of the Prophet in order to seek the pleasure of Allah's Apostle (by that action). (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 47, Number 766)

A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported: Never did I find any woman more loving to me than Sauda bint Zam'a. I wished I could be exactly like her who was passionate. As she became old, she had made over her day (which she had to spend) with Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) to ‘A'isha. She said: I have made over my day with you to ‘A'isha. So Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) allotted TWO DAYS to ‘A'isha, her own day (when it was her turn) and that of Sauda. (Sahih Muslim, Book 008, Number 3451)

Where in the above two hadiths does it state that the prophet wanted to divorce Sauda because she got too old?

In fact all the reports show that it was Sauda who feared the divorce, it was she who thought that perhaps the prophet wanted to divorce her because of her old age, but having said that all the reports do not say the prophet wanted to divorce her hence Shamoun has no case.

Secondly, let us assume that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) wanted to divorce her because he was no longer attracted to her, how is that a bad thing? How does that disprove him as a prophet? Again Shamoun has no case and is giving no real arguments; he is simply trying to argue on people's emotions.

Notice the irony, Shamoun wants us to reject Muhammad (AS) as a prophet for simply wanting to divorce a lady he wasn't attracted to, yet Shamoun wants us to accept his Biblical God who orders the slaughter of thousands and thousands of women and children. Who is Shamoun trying to kid with these weak arguments?
Notice the very sad reasoning we have here, Muhammad (pbuh) is false for wanting a divorce, but there is nothing wrong with the Biblical God murdering thousands of civilians. The logic here is truly amazing and it would be so funny if it were not so sad. Shamoun truly believes in such weak incoherent logic, and so do his many fellow evangelical Christian brothers and sisters.

Just look at the humour in this:

Yes folks I will now leave Islam because Muhammad wanted a divorce and that is so wrong, and I will become a Bible believing Christian who believes in a God that orders the killing of thousands upon thousands of women and children because that is so right and there is nothing against that! But a divorce! HECK NO, ARE YOU KIDDING ME? MUHAMMAD WANTED TO DIVORCE? NO WAY JOSE! I WILL NOW REJECT HIM AS A PROPHET FOR WANTING A DIVORCE, AND I SHALL COME TO A GOD WHO ORDERS WOMEN TO BE KILLED, RAPED, AND HAVE THEIR CHILDREN KILLED AS WELL!'

All rational people will see how silly that is, and that is what Shamoun truly wants us to believe. Shamoun then claims:

Muhammad caused a split in the marriage of his adopted son, Zaid, and then proceeded to marry his ex-wifeThe Lord Jesus warns against anyone who would lust and steal another man's wife

RESPONSE

Shamoun claims that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) caused a split in the marriage of Zaid, he even goes as far as to say that Jesus warns against people who steal another mans wife, as if to imply that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) stole Zaid's wife.

So here are a set of challenges for Shamoun:

-Show us where the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) ordered Zaid to divorce Zainab

-Show us where the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) told Zainab to ask for a divorce from Zaid so he could marry her

Shamoun then goes on to quote a hadith which shows some of the wives being ‘jealous' of the prophet's treatment towards Aisha. Yet Shamoun fails to tell or show us how that disproves Muhammad (pbuh) as a prophet! Again an argument based on nothing.

Shamoun then ends with his final argument:

The Quran suggests that men will have sex in heaven

RESPONSE

And how does that make Muhammad (pbuh) a false prophet? Again folks this is not a real argument, just an empty claim with Shamoun disagrees with, the Quran says we will have sex in heaven, yet I Shamoun cannot accept that therefore it is false and immoral!

Shamoun then seals the deal and shows he has no real case against the prophet but is simply arguing on his biased brainwashed dogma when he writes:

The most disgusting and disturbing part about all this is that Muhammad claimed that Mary, the mother of our risen Lord, would be one of his wives in Paradise. Ibn Kathir which writes:

"The Messenger of God. said, 'God MARRIED ME IN PARADISE TO MARY THE DAUGHTER OF 'IMRAN and to the wife of Pharaoh and the sister of Moses.' (Tabarani)" (Ibn Kathir, Qisas al-Anbiya [Cairo: Dar al-Kutub, 1968/1388], p. 381 - as cited in Aliah Schleifer's Mary The Blessed Virgin of Islam [Fons Vitae; ISBN: 1887752021; July 1, 1998], p. 64; bold and capital emphasis ours)

RESPONSE

What is wrong or disgusting about that? Shamoun it seems cannot pay attention to his own article, at the start of his article he wrote:

We ask all Muslim reading this to consider these propositions prayerfully and carefully, and see for themselves whether they are true or not.

Indeed it seems Shamoun forgot about his advice and has simply gone into subjective preaching mode, since the argument of marrying Mary is based on his subjective opinion, and his deep hate for the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and the Muslims.

Does Shamoun say why it is disgusting for the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to marry Mary? No, he merely claims it is disgusting because he hates Islam. Yet that is not a rational proper argument, that is not an argument one uses to try and make Muslims examine the truth, and that is what Shamoun was asking for at the start of his article. Shamoun has to show us why it is disgusting, just because he thinks it's wrong and just because he hates the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is not a reason to make it disgusting nor false.

So this brings us to the conclusion of Shamoun's fifth proposition, yet again Shamoun has brought nothing to the table, all he has done is bring his subjective biasness to try and argue against the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).
