The Prophet Muhammad VS The Bible during times of war

Share

Christian missionaries in their arguments against the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) often attack him for his role in battles and wars. Some go as far as to label him as a terrorist, bold accusations indeed.

In this article we thought we’d do something interesting, to compare and contrast the code of conduct of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) during times of war, with that of the Bible. The results as we shall shortly see, will come as a surprise to many who haven’t done their homework, and shall also reveal the double standards Christian missionaries have when it comes to their judgment and argumentation.

First Example- When the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) conquered Mecca

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) during his ministry was in war with the Arab pagans based in the city of Mecca. During this conflict, the Arab pagans had oppressed the Muslim minority in Mecca, forcing the Muslims to emigrate from their homes. Eventually the conflict escalated to a full out war when the Muslims could defend themselves, and so the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had engaged in quite a few battles with the Arab pagans. Eventually the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) triumphed over the pagans, marching with 10,000 soldiers to the city of Mecca, and reclaiming it.

Now when the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) conquered Mecca, what did he do with the pagan inhabitants of the city? Did he kill them all? Put them all to the sword? We read the following account of what took place:

'0 people of Quraysh! What do you think I will do with you?' One of them, Suhayl ibn Amr, who had fought against the Prophet, replied on behalf of the Makkans: 'We think (you will treat us) well, noble brother, son of a noble brother.' A radiant smile flashed across the face of the beloved Prophet of God and, in a spirit of magnanimity and tolerance, he said: "I shall speak to you as Yusuf [Joseph] spoke unto his brothers: 'There is no reproach against you today; God will forgive. He is the most Merciful and the most Compassionate.' " (Quran,12:92) And he added: 'No more responsibility burdens you today. 'Idhhabuu... wa antum at-tulaqaa - Go, for you are free.' (Ibn Ishaque)

Hardly the actions of a terrorist, wouldn’t you say?

Now let’s contrast and compare this with the Bible, when we read stories from the Bible, concerning men of God during times of battle, what did they do when they were victorious?

Deuteronomy Chapter 2:32-37

And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land. Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz. And the LORD our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people. And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain. From Aroer, which is by the brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the LORD our God delivered all unto us

Jeremiah 51:20-26

"You are my battle-ax and sword," says the LORD. "With you I will shatter nations and destroy many kingdoms. With you I will shatter armies, destroying the horse and rider, the chariot and charioteer. With you I will shatter men and women, old people and children, young men and maidens. With you I will shatter shepherds and flocks, farmers and oxen, captains and rulers. "As you watch, I will repay Babylon and the people of Babylonia for all the wrong they have done to my people in Jerusalem," says the LORD. "Look, O mighty mountain, destroyer of the earth! I am your enemy," says the LORD. "I will raise my fist against you, to roll you down from the heights. When I am finished, you will be nothing but a heap of rubble. You will be desolate forever. Even your stones will never again be used for building. You will be completely wiped out," says the LORD.

We could continue and quote ample verses of such kind, but the following 2 passages are more than enough. So when we compare and contrast the conduct of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) with that of the Bible during times of war we see that:

-The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) spared his enemies when taking over

-The Bible on the other commanded the death and mass slaughter-genocide of everybody within the cities, explicitly mentioning the women, children, and the elderly.

And Christian missionaries have the audacity to try and argue against the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh?

Second Example- Women and children during conflict

Now we have already seen the Bible talking about killing women and children during war, so that point is established, but what about the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)?

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) gave the following instructions during times of conflict:

Bukhari Volume 004, Book 052, Hadith Number 257. Narrated By 'Abdullah : During some of the Ghazawat of the Prophet a woman was found killed. Allah's Apostle disapproved the killing of women and children.

Muslim Book 019, Number 4294: It has been reported from Sulaiman b. Buraid through his father that when the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) appointed anyone as leader of an army or detachment he would especially exhort him to fear Allah and to be good to the Muslims who were with him. He would say: Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah. Fight against those who disbelieve in Allah. Make a war, do not embezzle the spoils; do not break your pledge; and do not mutilate (the dead) bodies; do not kill the children. When you meet your enemies who are polytheists, invite them to three courses of action. If they respond to any one of these, you also accept it and withold yourself from doing them any harm. Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them. Then invite them to migrate from their lands to the land of Muhairs and inform them that, if they do so, they shall have all the privileges and obligations of the Muhajirs. If they refuse to migrate, tell them that they will have the status of Bedouin Muilims and will be subjected to the Commands of Allah like other Muslims, but they will not get any share from the spoils of war or Fai' except when they actually fight with the Muslims (against the disbelievers). If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah's help and fight them. When you lay siege to a fort and the besieged appeal to you for protection in the name of Allah and His Prophet, do not accord to them the guarantee of Allah and His Prophet, but accord to them your own guarantee and the guarantee of your companions for it is a lesser sin that the security given by you or your companions be disregarded than that the security granted in the name of Allah and His Prophet be violated When you besiege a fort and the besieged want you to let them out in accordance with Allah's Command, do not let them come out in accordance with His Command, but do so at your (own) command, for you do not know whether or not you will be able to carry out Allah's behest with regard to them.

So according to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), you are not allowed to kill the women and children during the conflict.

On the other hand the Bible says:

Deuteronomy Chapter 3:1-7

Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei. And the LORD said unto me, Fear him not: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon. So the LORD our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining. And we took all his cities at that time, there was not a city which we took not from them, threescore cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. All these cities were fenced with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great many. And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city. But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey to ourselves

Conclusion

So in conclusion, when you look at it, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had a far higher standard of conduct during times of conflict, in comparison with the Bible. The Bible as we have read, commanded mass genocide, slaughter, and a holocaust upon its enemies during times of conflict.

Off course though, Christian missionaries who are so consistent have got no problem with it, and will even defend it, while trying to argue against the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and his participation in battles and wars.
